《クィア・フェミニズムであること》
「MULTIPLE SPIRITS／マルスピ」は、日本発のクィア・フェミニズム系アートZINEです。
異性愛を規範の中心とする社会への違和感を指し示す言葉として「クィア」を暫定的に使っています。暫定的な言葉の使用法は、語るための新たな言葉や語彙がいつの日か獲得されるかもしれないという願いとともにあります。
私たちは歴史的なフェミニズムの流れの中にもいると考えています。「フェミニズム的な思考」とは、男性性の排除ではなく、社会内部に存在するジェンダー、人種、階級などのあらゆる差別解体を視野にいれたものとして理解しています。それは日本において歪められてきたフェミニズムを解体するものであり、その言葉によって強化されるようなアイデンティティを表しているわけではありません。社会的に構築されていくアイデンティティの虚構性を解体しながら、流動的かつ政治的な主体性を立ち上げる方向へと向けられています。
その思考や芸術実践を語るための言葉を探る場所が「Multiple Spirits（マルスピ）」です。私たちが使う「クィア・フェミニズム」とは、重力に抗えないからだを持ちつつ、いつでも離脱の準備が可能な空港のような、国や性別を含むあらゆる境界線を行き来するための場所として設定しています。
《日本発であること》
「日本発」という言葉には、日本文化の発信ではなく、そのような日本社会の状況に置かれた私たちの視点から出発しているという意味を込めています。日本は文化的かつ表象の次元においては、ジェンダーや性表現の突飛さに対して寛容であると言われてきました。しかし、そのことが社会生活の寛容さと結びつくかと言うと決してそうではありません。どんな性、そして生に対しても、「普通」を超えると生きにくい社会です。とくに、日本社会には根深い性差別やミソジニー（女性嫌悪）、ホモフォビア（同性愛嫌悪）が潜んでおり、また同時にそれが人種差別主義やトランスジェンダー排除など異なる問題にも繋がっています。
近年日本においても、再びフェミニズムや性差別による問題が公的に語られるようになってきました。しかし、それらの問題の多くは「女性の問題」としてすり替えられてしまったり、「性の差異」として回収されてしまうことによって、人種差別は見落とされ、二元的な性や異性愛はさらに強化されてしまったようにも見えます。私たちはそのような異性愛主義規範への批判とともに、単一的な性の問題として物事を捉えるのではなく、インターセクショナル（交差的）な問題として考える必要性を強く感じています。
《アートであること》
多様な生き方をしている人たちが集まっているアートの文化的な風景のなかにも、ミソジニーや性差別、規範的なものに対する信仰が存在し続けています。多様性とは、新自由主義とグローバル化の中で求められる個人主義や自己責任の問題とは全く異なるものです。
しかし、私たちは誰かを糾弾したり告発をする手段としてこの場を使いたいのではありません。表面的に政治的に正しいといわれるものの連環に属するのではなく、何がそういったことをさせていくのかを明らかにしながら、アートの活動とともに言葉の、さらには生の多様性が活かさせることを願っているのです。

Multiple Spiritsは2018年4月に丸山美佳と遠藤麻衣によって始められました。「Multiple Spirits」、つまり「複数性で複合的に存在する心とか精神とか魂」という名前には、はっきりした定義は存在しませんが、規範化された単一性とは違うあり方を指し示しています。
ABOUT QUEER FEMINISM
MULTIPLE SPIRITS IS “A BILINGUAL QUEER FEMINIST ART ZINE FROM/WITHIN JAPAN”.
We use “queer” as a temporary umbrella term implying a sense of discomfort with society based on heterosexual norms. This temporary use encapsulates the wish that, one day in the future, we will acquire new languages or vocabularies to make a place that hasn’t yet happened but must.
We belong to the historical flow of feminisms. We understand that “feminist thinking” is a way to dismantle any discriminations of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and class inside society. We believe this way of thinking attenuates the narrowed feminism that has historically been distorted in Japan and internationally by the gender essentialists. Feminist thinking does not represent any fixed identity assigned and reinforced by the term. Rather, we aim at demolishing fictions of identities that have been constructed historically and socially and yielding political but fluid subjectivities.
Multiple Spirits is a place where we practice our thoughts and build our own languages for artistic practices. Here, we use “queer feminism” as a place where we cross over boundaries including nations and sexualities as if we are waiting at an airport to fly on an airplane, even though we have a body that is pulled down by the force of earth’s gravity.
ABOUT FROM/WITHIN JAPAN
“From/within Japan” does not mean we just introduce Japanese culture, but it indicates we launched this project from our situated condition in Japanese society. Japan has tolerance for extreme expressions of gender and sexuality as representation on the cultural level. However, this does not point to an actual generosity in the society, or rather, it is hard for any gender, sexuality, sex and life itself to exist in the society if they exceed the “normal”. Besides, it seems obvious that deep-seated sexism, misogyny and homophobia lurk in Japanese society, and they correlate with racism and the exclusions of transgender and non-binary positions.
In recent years, Japanese society started (again and finally) to discuss sexism and feminism publicly. However, by swapping out many of those issues as “women’s issues” or reducing them as “gender differences”, the duality of sex and gender, as well as heterosexuality, appear to be reinforced. Consequently, racism seems to have been overlooked from the dialogues. We are strongly aware of the need to think of the problems as intersectional rather than as a single issue of gender or sexuality while criticizing heteronormativity.
ABOUT ART
Even though the art field consists of people who have different ways of living, there are still sexism, misogyny, as well as faith in the norm, in every cultural landscape. We think that diversity is different from what neoliberalism and global capitalism force us to be as an individual with self-responsibility over our lives.
We do not want to use our space only to criticise or accuse someone or something. Trying not to belong to any chains of superficial Political Correctness, while unveiling structural problems, we wish that we will procure a variety of language alongside art practices as well as a variety of life.

Multiple Spirits was founded by Mika Maruyama and Mai Endo in April 2018. The name “Multiple Spirits” has no clear definition, but implies the different ways of thinking from any single normativity.
